Water Pollution Presentation
The Ottawa County Drain Commissioner has obtained an interactive enviroscape model that helps demonstrate the effects of runoff and pollution.
The model can be used to demonstrate some of the negative impacts we create on the environment during a storm event. When rain falls over the watershed, soil (cocoa), fertilizer (green Kool-Aid), and pesticides (red Kool-aid) are used to show how pollution enters a body of water. We then demonstrate the positive effects we can have under the same conditions using the prevention tools we discuss together, such as filter strips ad wetlands. The rain fall is repeated on the area using the prevention tools. Vocabulary is introduced and used throughout the presentation. We have a variety of vocabulary activities depending on the age group of the class. The entire presentation takes approximately one hour; however, times can be adjusted to fit your needs.
