Are you a new planning commissioner looking for solid background information about local planning? In this training, Ron and Crystal provide an overview of planning and zoning essentials for incoming planning commissioners. Experienced commissioners can also benefit from the opportunity to hear the insights of these two municipal government veterans. Topics for this training include the following:

  • The statutory basis of local planning
  • Relationship between master plans and zoning ordinances
  • Duties of a Planning Commission
  • Duties of a Zoning Board of Appeals
  • Legal responsibilities relating to the zoning and rezoning of property
  • Contract zoning
  • How to avoid an unconstitutional taking of property
  • How to run an effective and efficient meeting

Zoning Board of Appeals Basic Training

Zoning board of appeals members are responsible for making difficult decisions regarding the application of a local zoning ordinance to specific properties or developments. This training seminar provides guidance and tools to support effective and objective decision-making on zoning-related issues. Topics for this training include the following:

  • Roles and responsibilities of a Zoning Board of Appeals
  • The rationale behind zoning ordinances
  • Zoning variances
  • Non-conforming uses
  • Appeals of Administrative Decisions
  • Procedures and protocols to ensure that the decision-making process has been conducted in a legal manner

This session is eligible for three (3) credits from the MSU Extension Master Citizen Planner Program.
