Medicare Prescription Drug Insurance, called Medicare Part D

  • On January 1, 2006, people with Medicare have a new opportunity to purchase prescription drugs insurance to cover some prescription costs. (Traditionally, Medicare did not pay for prescriptions unless they were given as part of a hospital stay or by a doctor.)
  • Medicare Part D is very complicated and is being marketed to people on Medicare by the insurance companies which offer it. There are 18 companies that offer a total of 40 separate plans in Michigan to choose from; each of the 40 separate plans differs from the other 39 in significant ways.
  • It is very important that all people who have Medicare review the benefits, options and features relating to the Medicare Prescription Drug coverage and make an informed decision concerning enrolling in a plan.
  • In addition, insurance companies are now advertising a different kind of Medicare health plan called Medicare Advantage.
  • Human Services Agencies strongly urge you to discuss your options with a trained counselor, rather than picking a plan on your own.
  • Before you begin checking on options with a counselor, make a complete list of your current drugs and dosages.

Key Dates:

Jan. 1, 2006 -- Coverage begins for people who have joined by Dec. 31, 2005
May 15, 2006 --Last day to join a plan offering coverage for 2006
Nov. 15 - Dec. 31, 2006 --Next opportunity to enroll
