Stopping the Flu
While Influenza can be easily spread, it can also be easily stopped from
spreading. These simple steps can reduce your risk of getting the flu.
Get the flu shot
One of the best ways to prevent Influenza is to get vaccinated every year. Click here for the Ottawa County Health Deparment's flu clinic schedule.
Cover your mouth and nose
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your inner elbow when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
Wash your hands
Washing your hands often with soap and water will help protect you from germs. While not a substitution for proper hand washing, you can also use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if needed. Most hand sanitizers are not effective against viruses such as the flu.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.
Keep your distance.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick, too.
Stay home when you're sick
Stay home from work, school and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
