Local artist, Carolyn Stich has chosen this year’s winning poster design for the
6th annual Walk For Warmth poster contest.

The winning design was created by Sarah Neumann, a Junior at Zeeland West High School, who chose a stitch design as her motif. Given the topic of the poster – promoting the Walk For Warmth – it was the motif, layout and color choices that Stich found to be the winning combination.

“Sarah’s was such a fitting design for the topic of the piece,” says Stich. “The cross stitch design and Sarah’s design elements made for such a cozy piece of work. It was just so fitting and perfect for a poster that’s helping spread warmth to people who can’t afford it. I just loved her design.”

“I began researching what the Walk was all about,” says Neumann, “and researched images and ideas that would convey my style. I was inspired by home, holidays and a warm sweater.”

“Sarah is a Junior but it’s her first year as a graphic art and design student,” says Debra Kemppainen, Art and Business Teacher, Zeeland High School. “Her talent really shines in this poster design. She unified her ideas through typography and the cross stitch style, and she chose a color scheme that was warm and comforting to our hearts.”

Carolyn Stich is an excellent choice of design judge. She is a multi-faceted, multi-award-winning artist living and working in Holland, MI. She has illustrated 10 children’s books and continues a portfolio of commissioned work for various businesses around the West Michigan area. She owns and operates a storefront studio where she works and sells her designs. There were no names on the designs when Stich looked through them, however, upon seeing each other they realized Neumann had been a student of Stich’s several years ago.

Neumann’s poster will be printed by Schreur Printing, and distributed throughout Ottawa County.

Community Action Agency’s Walk For Warmth is an annual event in its 26th year, raising money for families in Ottawa County, Michigan who have received a shut-off notice from their utility company. Last year, through its range of programs, CAA assisted over 5,000 qualified individuals.

This year’s event takes place Saturday, February 13, 8:30 AM, City On A Hill, 100 Pine Street, Zeeland, MI, 49464. Registration for the 2-mile walk around downtown Zeeland is free and more information can be found at www.miottawa.org/w4w.
