The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office began the Citizen Police Academy in 2009 to increase the awareness and understanding of law enforcement's role in the community. The 9-session program is now offered annually giving an inside look at law enforcement to 25 citizens. Topics include:

  • Undercover Investigations & Narcotics

  • Sheriff's E-Unit Duties & Demonstration
  • Criminal Scientific Support Unit & Crime Scene Investigation
  • Use of force Explanation & Demonstrations
  • Firearms, Range & Simulator
  • Sheriff's Office Special Operations
  • Criminal Justice Legal System
  • Accident & Fatal Accident Investigations
  • Community Policing

2020 Citizen Police Academy

We are now accepting applications for the 2020 Citizen Police Academy. Sessions are from 6 to 9PM on Thursdays from March 5 through May 7. (No class during spring break week.) Applicants will be notified of their acceptance near Feb 15. Potential candidates for the Citizen Police Academy must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum age of 18
  • Live or work in Ottawa County
  • No Misdemeanor arrests within one year of application
  • No prior felony arrests
