The members of the Reserve Unit are individuals from the community who have an active interest to be involved with law enforcement. Reserve deputies ride evenings with full-time deputies, as the second deputy in the car. A reserve deputy that rides as a second uniformed deputy in a patrol unit is not compensated for this service.
In addition to ride along responsibilities, reserve deputies also work traffic and crowd control at fairs, the Berlin Raceway, high school football and basketball games, the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival, and other public and private functions, as requested. When working these special events, reserve deputies are paid by the event contractor through a special contract with the County. Reserve deputies purchase their own department-sanctioned uniforms and equipment, at no expense to the Sheriff’s Office. Reserves also attended monthly training sessions held at the Sheriff’s Office.
The Reserve Unit is comprised of four squads: Holland, Jenison, Grand Haven/Spring
Lake, and Marne. Each squad has a leader who handles the assignments in that
area. The entire unit is under the supervision of the Sheriff’s Office
Law Enforcement Uniform Services Captain. Sergeant Derek Gerencer currently
serves as the liaison between the Sheriff’s Office and the Reserve
is available for questions and comments regarding the Reserve Unit.
